The Mail Driver plays a vital role in supporting the operational effectiveness of Essex Police by ensuring the secure, timely, and accurate movement of items across the county. This includes the collection and delivery of exhibits, letters, parcels, and other sensitive materials such as cash and controlled substances, all handled in line with strict procedures and evidential standards.
The role is based out of our Headquarters Chelmsford site and requires travelling to multiple police sites and partner locations, maintaining a reliable and efficient delivery schedule while upholding the highest levels of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism. The Mail Driver is critical in supporting key functions such as Digital Forensics, Property Services, and Crime Scene Investigation, helping to maintain the flow of essential materials that underpin investigations.
In addition to driving duties, the role is based within the Mail Hub, where responsibilities include franking outgoing mail, sorting incoming deliveries, and ensuring items are logged, tracked, and distributed correctly. The postholder will also engage with internal customers, providing a professional and helpful point of contact for mail and logistics enquiries.
This is a hands-on role requiring a flexible, dependable individual who can balance driving duties with operational hub tasks, contributing to the smooth running of a critical support function across the force.
At shortlisting we will be looking for essential evidence of:
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office applications such as Microsoft Word and Outlook.
- Strong understanding of confidentiality.
- Strong organisational and time management skills to manage delivery schedules and workloads.
- Ability to undertake manual handling tasks safely.
- Ability to work independently with a high level of reliability.
In addition, it would be helpful if you could evidence:
- Previous experience in a delivery, logistics, or transport-based role.
- Experience of working in a customer-facing environment.
- Knowledge of handling sensitive or evidential materials.
Our location
This role is based within the Mail Hub at Chelmsford Headquarters. The position is a static role with agile elements to carry out mail routes.
