A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen within Kent Police Health and Wellbeing Services department for a health and safety professional to undertake the role of Health and Safety Manager for Kent Police. This role forms part of the Health and Wellbeing department and is a senior role within the organisation.

 

The successful candidate will be the nominated competent person for Kent Police and will be the force specialist for all health and safety matters by providing direction, health and safety assurance, support and advice to both the force and a small Health and Safety team. Liaison and close working with the Health and Safety team and manager in Essex Police will be a necessary part of the role. The successful candidate will be a dynamic individual who is passionate about all health and safety matters and demonstrates real drive and enthusiasm for progressing the safety agenda in Kent Police. The postholder will play a pivotal role in managing and developing proactive health and safety initiatives for Kent and this will include providing direction, support and advice on behalf of Health and Wellbeing Services in order to promote, disseminate, implement, monitor and review of health and safety policies and practices throughout the force, including relevant Gold Groups, Health & Safety Board and other strategic level meetings.

 

The postholder will be required to establish effective working relationships with all relevant internal and external bodies and individuals associated with health and safety in order to ensure a co-ordinated, multi-disciplined approach to problems. This will require close working relationships with Divisions, Departments, staff associations and Unison.

 

You will lead in the design, development, implementation and continual review programme of self-inspection and audits throughout the Force which covers the latest legislative position etc, and undertake formal thematic inspections on a regular basis ensuring that arrangements are made to implement the findings. You will be required to manage and conduct accident investigation on behalf of the Force when required, provide expert health and safety advice and ensure all health and safety aspects and implications are addressed by linking directly with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

 

This post is Head of Profession for Health and Safety ensuring that training is promoted, providing guidance and advice to all staff within the Force with regards to health and safety, in order to establish an appropriate level of knowledge and awareness of good Health and Safety practices and procedures.

 

The post is responsible for the development, review and updating of the Forces’ written health and safety policies and procedures and in addition will be required to prepare reports and review other written documentation to ensure that all advice relating to health and safety matters are accurate, consistent and legally compliant. This includes implementing all new legislative demands and changes in health and safety requirements and establish appropriate working relationships with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), and other relevant external bodies to ensure that all advice given is in line with current directives, which will include working with Home Office and NPCC working parties in respect of Health and Safety issues.

 

You will manage all matters related to fire precautions, in particular alarm testing, evacuation procedures, fire policy etc, in close liaison with nominated officers to ensure all buildings have appropriate procedures and that all equipment is in full working order.

 

About you

  • You will have previous experience of leading health and safety in a large multi-site organisation.

  • You are a Chartered Member of IOSH and a NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate would also be advantageous.

  • You can evidence supporting, developing, implementing and co-ordinating a range of proactive health and safety initiatives and have strong links with the Health and Safety Executive.

  • You have a proven track record of dealing with all health and safety issues, including experience of developing, implementing and reviewing policies, undertaking audits and inspections and initiatives pertinent to the Force.

  • You can demonstrate strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills to ensure credibility and the confidence of chief officers and senior police personnel.

 

Please note: The successful candidate will be required to work flexibly to cover core business needs. This may require working outside of office hours. This role will also require travel to sites across both Kent and Essex.
